The key to winter comfort is layering with the 3 "w’s": a "wicking" layer against your skin to keep you dry, a "warmth" layer for insulation, and an outer "wind" layer for the elements.

___Long underwear tops & bottoms: the "wicking" layer to keep you dry & warm from the inside
(can be purchased from Wintergreen for about $15@)
___Insulating tops & pants: the "warmth" layer to keep you warm throughout (can be rented from Wintergreen for $15 (pants) & $30 (insulating anorak)
___Shell jacket & pants: the "wind" layer to keep you dry & warm from the outside (can be rented from Wintergreen for $20 (pants) & $40 (shell anorak)
___Warm hat (can be purchased from Wintergreen for $25-$30)
___Warm mittens (can be purchased from Wintergreen for about $35)
___Warm socks (can be purchased from Wintergreen for about $7)
___Warm boots: insulated snow boots with felt liners that are removable for drying (can be rented from Wintergreen for $30)
___Miscellaneous items like sunglasses, swimsuit (for saunas), toiletries, scarf or neck warmer, camera and/or camcorder, and (for camping trips) a flashlight and daypack.
