Although Ely prides itself with being at the “end of road,” it’s surprisingly easy to get here, even in the winter! Most of our guests from the Midwest choose to drive here (4 hours from the Twin Cities, 10 hours from Chicago). Scenic 4-lane divided highways bring you nearly all the way here; the last 45 miles are improved 2 lane. The roads are very well maintained (2-wheel drive vehicles are fine). In fact in our 28 years, no Wintergreen guests have ever been delayed by road closures! Your “Trip Kit” will include an Ely-area road map to the lodges. Check in time is 4-6 pm but if you arrive later—no problem—just call ahead and we’ll hold dinner for you. Check-out on your last morning is around 10 but we can provide an earlier breakfast if your travel plans require it.

By Air

Arriving here by air is easy as well. From its hub in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Northwest Airlines offers daily flights to both Hibbing (near Virginia, MN) and Duluth. Visit http://www.nwa.com/ or call 800-225-2525 for details. Early afternoon arrival & departure times are ideal. Ely Cab (218-349-1383) and Yellow Cab (218-365-6006) provide shuttle service (1¼-hour from Hibbing, 2-hours from Duluth). Their flat rates can often be split among several guests and if you need to get outfitted with our rental clothing, they'll stop and wait for you at the Wintergreen store in Ely at no extra charge before continuing on to the lodge. But be sure to call them and book your shuttle needs well in advance.

Some of our guests, especially those who opt to extend their stay in Minnesota to tour area, choose to fly to Minneapolis/St. Paul or Duluth and rent a car. That works just fine. In fact, some area lodges provide discounts for Wintergreen guests who choose to arrive before or stay on after their dogsled trip.
