5 Night Photo Adventure Dogsled Vacation

with Smithsonian/Time-Life photographer Layne Kennedy.

This great trip has a dogsledding itinerary similar to our 4-night trips and includes an extra 5th day of van travel to area sites of scenic & historic interest for photo shoots. Woven through it is a running clinic on outdoor photography facilitated by Layne Kennedy of Superior/Gunflint Photography Workshops. Layne is one of the best in his business (and you'll love his infectious humor!). His work regularly appears in Smithsonian, LIFE, Outside, and National Geographic publications. (He photographed our Greenland trek for a Smithsonian Magazine cover story.)

Whether you're a professional photographer or a point-and-shoot beginner, you'll come away from this trip with outstanding photos of your dogsledding experience and a host of new photographic skills. The evenings are filled with fun presentations by Layne on such topics as the history of photography, tips for getting your images published and how to use the latest photo technology tools. You'll especially enjoy the photo fest on the final evening. We'll provide computers on which you can organize your favorite digital images from the week to share over popcorn with the group as a "slide show"  a chance to reminisce about the week and gain some helpful critique from Layne.

This trip has been a perennial favorite at Wintergreen for guests and staff alike for many years and was featured on CBS. Visit Layne's website (workshop page) and enjoy the great pics that have resulted from these trips at www.laynekennedy.com

  • Enjoy "mushing" a team of our friendly Eskimo dogs on a variety of beautiful trails
  • 3 days of guided dogsledding plus a day of visits to area scenic & historic sites for photo ops
  • Photo shoots while sledding and skill clinics at the lodge offered each day by Layne Kennedy
  • Lodging involves nights at either or both Wintergreen and Timber Trail Lodges
  • Double-occupancy bedrooms & possible use of shared bathrooms (private bathrooms when available)
  • Indoor lunch 1st & last day; campfire trailside picnic lunches on other days, plus snack & beverage breaks
  • Dinners prepared by our Wintergreen chef and staff cooks, served family-style on buffet
  • Evening socializing at the fireplace or slide talks by Layne on a variety of topics
  • Chance to try snowshoeing, skiing, "ski-jouring" and our Finnish sauna
  • A special welcoming dinner on your first night and send-off brunch on the final "Musher's Graduation" morning

Guest ProfileOn past trips, the guests (8-10 total) ranged from teens to seniors with an equal mix of men/women; 80% came with a friend or family member, the others came alone. About half the guests on this trip have professional photography aspirations while the others are casual shutterbugs simply interested in improving their skills for personal enjoyment (and you're even welcome to come along just for the fun, without taking pics!)

Guest Instructor

Specializing in magazine features, Layne Kennedy's work has appeared in over a hundred different magazines world-wide on subjects as diverse as Wolves in the Northern Hemisphere to boat builders in the Caribbean, as well as numerous books. His strong sense of abstract design, combined with journalistic story telling imagery, makes him a favorite among picture editors. His great sense of humor and adventurous spirit make him a favorite among Wintergreen guests! "Our photographic approach to these workshops is simple," says Layne, "We cover our adventure trip as if it were a magazine assignment. Participants are given instruction on general points of coverage to document as well as specific creative assignments like the use of flash, motion, night imagery, portrait, landscape, ect., to be included with their visual story."

Photo Gear

Layne sends out a pre-trip packet that outlines the types of cameras, photo equipment and cold-weather care (batteries/cases/straps, etc.) that work best for this trip. But you don't need top-of-the-line gear, some guests shoot with hundred-dollar digital cameras. Film camera buffs are welcome but we're unable to develop the film in time for the final evening slide show. Need more photo info? Just email Layne at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Wintergreen is a featured destination among Nikon Photo’s Mentor Worldwide Photo Workshop Treks. We're a global photogenic hotspot.

Factors to consider in choosing your trip:

Age & Experience: These don't matter. People ages 6-86 have enjoyed our trips.  Most of our guests have never dogsledded before (and some have never seen snow!). No experience is needed.

Fitness & Health: Dogsledding accommodates persons of virtually any fitness level. However, if you are seriously out-of-shape (for example, if you find walking a mile to be exhausting), then our trips may be too challenging. If you have basic fitness (that is, if you could walk 2-3 miles without much difficulty), then you'd enjoy any of our lodge-to-lodge trips. If you're moderately fit or better (and could handle, for example, a 5-mile walk), then our camping trips would be a fit for you as well. If you have concerns about your fitness, please feel free to discuss them with us.   We're happy to accommodate any dietary requests and various health conditions and disabilities.

Singles, 3-Somes & Groups: Most of guests come with a friend or family member, but we're happy to accommodate singles on our 3- & 4-night "good" lodge trips and our camping trips.  We can generally accommodate 3-somes on any trips and groups of 4 or more can book their own private custom trip

"Good," "Better," "Best" Lodge Trips: All 3 options feature a similar amount of dogsledding, as well as great meals & lodging. The "Good" trips (8 guests) involve private bedrooms and shared bathrooms. The "Better" trips (6 guests) involve private bedrooms & private bathrooms for each pair of guests.  The "Best' trips (4 guests) involve private suites or private cabins for each pair of guests, plus gourmet dinners.  The smaller group size of the "Better" and "Best" trips also means the guides are better able to tailor each day's dogsledding itinerary to guest interests. Our "Good," "Better" & "Best" 4-night trips are generally offered every p.m. Wednesday to a.m. Sundays. The 3-night trips, offered p.m. Thursday to a.m. Sunday,, are similar to our 4-night "Good" trips but are simply a day shorter and feature family pricing. Our Specialty Trips (5-night Photo Workshop & 4-night Parent-Child Pair Vacation) also feature 3 full days of guided dogsledding PLUS additional activities with guests instructors.

Camping vs. Lodge Trips: Our "Beginning" camping trips include as much dogsledding as our 4-night lodge trips, plus many more experiences. So if you're moderately fit, feeling adventurous and want to go for the "gusto," choose a camping trip. Age doesn't matter -- kids and seniors enjoy our camping trips as much as our lodge trips. Our "Advanced" trips are even more adventurous and involve skiing or snowshoeing in addition to dogsledding. Our Arctic trips rank somewhere between our "Beginning" and "Advanced" trips in terms of challenge. The dogsledding and camping logistics are similar to our "Beginning" trips but the arctic setting is, of course, vastly more remote & exotic.

Our lodge trips are compared in the chart below, followed by the dates and rates for all trips to help you choose the one that's best for you. Still not sure which trip to choose?  Just call us: 877-753-3386. If money is the issue, let us know if you can go "standby." We'll alert you to openings offered at a substantial discount if cancellations occur within a few weeks of a trip.

Trip details pending, call us for info

Since 1997, Wintergreen has offered this very special parent-child experience -- for pairs involving a parent (mother or father or grandparent) and daughter or son (ages 7-12). It ranks among our popular trips. For school scheduling convenience, this special itinerary is offered over both MLK school holiday weekend and President's Holiday weekend.

Each parent-child pair gets their own dogteam to enjoy 3 days of dogsledding together (and their own private double bedroom in our lodge). Each group includes 4 or 5 pairs. Each trip date can accommodate up to 2 groups so, depending upon registrations, we can sometimes arrange separate parent-daughter and parent-son itineraries.

We call these trips a "Wintergreen Workshop" because in addition to dogsledding each day, each evening the kids (and parents if they like!) enjoy group games and workshops with a focus of journaling, campcrafts and storytelling.  The itinerary of these trips is similar to our 4-night "Good" dogsled vacations with the added fun and learning of the evening games and workshop.

An extraordinary experience to share with your child! As one father participant noted: "This was by far the best experience I've ever shared with my daughter.  Our relationship took a quantum leap & so did her confidence!"

  • each parent-child pair gets to mush their own team of our friendly Eskimo dogs on beautiful wilderness trails
  • each pair gets to feed & care for their dogs as much as they'd like (and help with the puppy pen as well!)
  • each trip typically includes 4-5 parent-child pairs and 2-3 Wintergreen guides
  • includes 3 days of guided dogsledding with visits to sites of scenic, historic and wildlife interest
  • includes 4 nights at Wintergreen Lodge or 4 nights at Timber Trail Lodge's Diamond Willow retreat
  • private double-occupancy bedroom provided for each pair, bathrooms are shared
  • indoor lunch 1st day; campfire trailside lunches on other days plus snack & beverage breaks
  • dinners generally prepared by our professional chef, served family-style
  • evening socializing around the fireplace, group games, journaling and northwoods stories with your guides
  • creative writing, storytelling & campcrafts workshops
  • optional chance to try snowshoeing, skiing, ski-jouring and our traditional Finnish sauna
  • a special welcoming dinner on your first night and send-off brunch on the final "Musher's Graduation" morning
  • free tickets to view timber wolves in a woodland enclosure at Ely's International Wolf Center
  • rental clothing & boots available as need in both adults and kids sizes

Sample Itinerary (may vary with trip dates)DAY 1: Arrive in Ely mid to late afternoon by car or airport taxi shuttle.  Stop at Wintergreen store for any rental clothing needs, continue to lodge (Wintergreen or Timber Trail's Diamond Willow retreat) for check-in and site tour. Meet your guides, dogs & other parents & daughters. Welcoming dinner at 6 pm followed by trip orientation session and clothing check. "Dear Diary" tips on journaling session and map & compass campcrafts class. Optional night visit to the kennel (a chance to 'howl' with your dogs at the moon and watch for northern lights!)

DAY 2: Sunrise kennel care (optional) followed by breakfast and "Dogsledding 101" training. The big moment arrives as your guides help you launch your team and accompany you on a dogsled training trip.  Lunch in lodge, skills review and rest break. "The Creative Muse" session on how to think like a writer and tell a good story. Afternoon dogsled trip. Return to lodge 4-5 pm. Treat & water your dogs. R&R. Dinner. Writing exercise and shared readings and northwoods stories.  Free time for games and socializing around the fireplace.

DAY 3: Kennel care & breakfast.  Depart on full day of mushing with trailside campfire lunch and rest stops at scenic sites. Wintergreen guides accompany your group on skis, providing tune-up tips on your mushing skills and sharing natural history info along the route. Trailside campfire lunch with campcraft fire-building workshop. Return to lodge mid-afternoon. Treat & water your dogs. R&R. 6 pm dinner. Campcrafts workshop on northwoods navigation and knots. Optional  fireplace stories and/or 'film fest' to view the National Geographic documentaries on Wintergreen adventures.

DAY 4:  Now that everyone "knows the ropes," the guides will plan the day based upon group interests with such choices as easy or challenging trails and a longer or shorter routes. Scenic stops might include the 'ice cave,' the Murphys Falls overlook, the river bluff, the old growth forest and you may opt to include time for skiing/snowshoeing or to try "ski-jouring" (being towed on skis by a sled dog). Arrive at next lodge mid to late afternoon. Dog treats. R&R. Celebration dinner. Shared readings from everyone's journals. Optional evening activities: campfire gathering and/or Finnish-style sauna followed by the traditional "roll in the snow" or dip through the hole in ice! OR van shuttle to International Wolf Center for their Saturday evening "What's for Dinner?" program to observe the wolves feeding OR fireside arctic stories with Wintergreen director Paul Schurke.

DAY 5: Kennel care, "bon voyage" breakfast buffet, "Mushers Graduation" event, kennel visit to bid your dogs adieu, check-out mid to late morning (or earlier if your travel plans require). Visit Ely's International Wolf Center, tickets compliments of Wintergreen (winter hours: 10-4 Sat/Sun and other days when pre-arranged by Wintergreen).

Enjoy 2 days of dogsled fun on these shorter 3-night "Extended Weekend" trips which, like our 4-night "GOOD" trips, typically include 8 guests in lodges with 4-6 bedrooms and 2 or 3 baths. Depending upon the guest configuration (singles, pairs, 3-somes, etc.) this may involve some use of shared bathrooms.  Open to singles, pairs, or groups. No experience needed! (NOTE: In comparison, our 4-night "BETTER" trips accomodate 6 guests with private bathrooms for each pair,  our 4-night "BEST" trips include up to 4 guests.)

  • Suited for singles or pairs, specially discounted for families with kids ages 6 & up
  • "Mush" a team of our friendly Eskimo dogs on beautiful northwoods trails
  • Each trip my include about 8 guests, plus at least 2 guides
  • 2 days of guided dogsledding to sites of scenic, historic and wildlife interest
  • Double-occupancy bedrooms (or single private rooms, with surcharge)
  • Indoor lunch 1st day;  trailside lunch on 2nd day plus snack breaks
  • Great dinners prepared by our chef, served family-style
  • Evening fireplace socializing and northwoods stories with your guides
  • Optional chance to try snowshoes, skis, ski-jouring and our Finnish sauna
  • Welcoming dinner on first night and final "Mushers Graduation" morning
  • Discounted for youth: ages 6-11 get $200 off, ages 12-17 get $100 off
  • Families discounts of up to $300 off per child (& special 'kid-sized' dogsleds!)

Guest Profile:

These trips often overlap with our 4-night standard trips and thus have a similarly diverse social mix, with about 50% of guests as family groups, 25% as couples, 15% as pairs or groups of friends and 10% as singles. Our 3-night trips have our highest percentage of youth, with about 20% of guests 16 or younger. Last year's ages ranged 6-78. If you're considering this as a family vacation option, chances are there'll be other kids on board for yours to connect with.

Meals:

You'll enjoy great food and plenty of it! Dinners and 1st day luncheons are prepared by our staff cook under the direction of our Wintergreen chef. Your guides (who love to cook nearly as much as dogsled!), will prepare your breakfasts and your campfire lunches on the 2nd and 3rd days of dogsledding. Meals are served family-style around a big long table with guides & guests eating together and sharing tales from the trail.

Lodging:

Some of these trips are based at Wintergreen. Others are based at Timber Trail Lodge (generally in the the White Pine group cabin).  Some of these trips are "3-night/4-night combos" meaning that some guests book them as a 4-night itinerary (see our 4-night Standard Trips) and stay on for an extra day.  Lodge dress is very casual (loafers & a sweat suit are just fine!)

Sample Itinerary (may vary with trip dates)

DAY 1: Arrive in Ely early afternoon by car or airport taxi shuttle.  Visit Ely rental store for any rental clothing needs, continue to lodge (Wintergreen or Timber Trail) for check-in and site tour. Meet your guides & dogs. Welcoming dinner at 6 pm followed by trip orientation session and clothing check.

Return to lodge midday for lunch, skills review and rest break. Depart on afternoon dogsled trip. Return to lodge 4-5 pm. Treat & water your dogs. R&R. Dinner. Optional socializing with guests & guides around the fireplace.

DAY 3: Kennel care & breakfast followed by full day of mushing with trailside campfire lunch and rest stops at scenic sites. (If your itinerary involves changing lodges on Day 3, your luggage and vehicles will be shuttled ahead.) Wintergreen guides accompany your group on skis, providing tune-up tips on your mushing skills and sharing natural history info along the route. Arrive at lodge late afternoon. Treat & water your dogs. Optional skiing/snowshoeing or R&R. 6 pm dinner. Optional evening activates include Finnish-style sauna, campfire gathering, fireplace stories, and/or 'film fest' to view the National Geographic documentaries on Wintergreen adventures.

DAY 4: Kennel care, goodbye breakfast, kennel visit to bid your dogs adieu, check-out mid to late morning (or earlier if your travel plans require). If you weren't able to visit Ely's International Wolf Center (www.wolf.org) or North American Bear Center (www.bear.org)  during their winter hours (Fri/Sat 10-5) before your dogsled trip, we can sometimes arrange a special visit to the wolf viewing area or bear exhibits on your check-out day.
